About Catia Garell:
Catia (Cat) Garell is an instructor for the Executive Certificate in Home Modification Program of the University of Southern California Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. In teaching Course 2, “Home Modification: How to Get it Done,” Cat brings nearly two decades of direct occupational therapy experience combined with expertise in home modification service delivery. Since 2001, Cat has been performing accessibility assessments and identifying barriers to function and access for clients with disabilities across private, state, commercial, federal sectors, and internationally in Guam and Australia. Her medical background provides a unique problem-solving perspective while in the built environment. She has a long history working in skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, and home health. Cat is the co-founder of Thrive for Life LLC, which is the only residential accessibility consulting firm in Hawaii. At Thrive for Life, Cat works directly with nurse case managers, social workers, doctors, lawyers, families, caregivers, and contractors who are looking for direction and guidance throughout the home modification process. She is partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Health and Human Services, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, and various other insurance providers and non-profits. She loves achieving her clients’ goals: to be safe, comfortable, and thriving in their homes! Cat’s passion for mentoring other professionals in the home modification field has translated to presenting at national conferences, webinars, and locally at colleges in Hawaii. She is a proud graduate of the University of Southern California Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy School, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 2001 and Masters of Occupational Therapy in 2002.
